STUDENTS FROM THE COLLEGE OF PHARMACY at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, located in North Chicago, IL, held a banquet in support of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR)’s Go Red For Women campaign. The Have a Heart banquet took place the evening of May 2 at the Deer Path Inn in Lake Forest, IL, and was a success due to strong ticket sales and generous sponsorship from CVS. Students were proud to donate the Banquet’s proceeds of $2350 to the ILCOR in support of its mission to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke, with emphasis on the importance of BLS, PALS, and ACLS certification.
170 students and faculty were in attendance for a night of dinner and dancing that also included an inspiring presentation on the Go Red For Women campaign by Dr. Karl ‘Fritz’ Disque, a practicing cardiac anesthesiologist with the Disque Foundation and an Associate Board Member of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation. This movement was designed to empower women to take charge of their heart health through awareness and action. Heart disease affects hundreds of thousands of women yearly. This could be your sister, mother, daughter, friend, or family member. With knowledge and motivation, women can work together to improve the health of their loved ones.
What Are The Goals?
Cardiovascular claimed the lives of nearly 500,000 American women yearly, despite the fact it has been rejected and supposed of as an older man’s disease. To dismiss myths and raise awareness of heart disease as the No. 1 killer of women, Fritz and the American Heart Association find passion, inspiration, and social initiatives to enthuse women to take control of their health through BLS, PALS, and ACLS certification courses. Heart disease is a worldwide problem, and Go Red For Women encourages women to stand and fight together, not alone. At the Have a Heart Banquet, the pharmacy school faculty, and students fundraised and contributed all proceeds to support research, greater communication, education, and instruction for all women affected by heart disease.
Fritz’s presentation included staggering, statistics, facts, and insights into how Cardiovascular disease affects women. He discussed the importance of proper education, like ACLS certification, and how it can change the health of the world. Fritz also spoke about the diversity and global impacts of Go Red for Women, with the multicultural efforts of Go Red Por Tu Corazón, a bilingual program that aids Latinas with Heart Disease, and across the globe in more than 65 countries.
Fritz and the ILCOR have seen the impacts of Go Red for Women in women’s homes through NBC networking, the doctor’s office with Get with the Guideline, on Capitol Hill with The Heart for Women Act, and in women’s hearts. The Rosalind Franklin University pharmacy students and staff, and Fritz have continued to contribute to the growing $300 million for research and education, and are also supporting the end to gender disparities in legislation.
